The City of Vero Beach
From: An Introduction to Vero Beach (See Link Below)
Unpretentiously elegant Vero Beach is one of Florida's most idyllic vacation destinations. This recognition comes not only from residents and visitors alike, but from the American publication, Rating Guide to Cities which named Vero Beach as the best small city in Florida. Vero Beach is one of only four Florida towns included in "The 100 Best Art Towns in America".
Vero Beach radiates cultural wealth. The $2.5 million Center for the Arts is the largest combination art museum and teaching facility in the entire State of Florida. Riverside Theater, a 630 seat facility, is the only professional Equity theater on the Treasure Coast.
Vero Beach has frequently been called the "Central Gemstone of the Treasure Coast". With an inherent natural beauty, preserved and protected by her residents, as well as strict building codes, Vero is a peaceful haven from the frantic lifestyles of many of today's cities.
Stately live oak trees form a canopy over many of the residential streets while an abundance of colorful oleander, hybiscus, and bougainvillia lend to the tropical atmosphere. For an unusual experience, come see the manatee during the winter months as they seek the warmth of the water at the Vero Beach Municipal Power Plant.
The serene atmosphere enveloping Vero Beach provides a background for a wide range of recreational activity - both active and passive. The municipal park system includes 4 beach front parks and major recreation centers at both Riverside Park and Leisure Square.
Vero Beach is the smallest city in the nation to have its own professional baseball team. The Dodgers have been an integral part of the community since 1948 when they arrived here.
Vero Beach is frequently approached by boat from the north and south via the Intercoastal Waterway. Visitors and residents are welcome at our 71 slip marina that has 42 moorings in a controlled and protected area.
The City of Vero beach was originally called "Vero" in 1891. It wasn't until 1925 that the name was officially changed to "Vero Beach". Vero Beach is the county seat of Indian River County.

'Vero Man'
Vero Beach was the site of a major archaeological discovery by local resident Frank Ayers in 1915. Known as the 'Vero Man', the find created an international controversy for it provided the first evidence that human beings had inhabited the ' new world' prior to the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (c.10,000 BCE).
Over the next thirty years, the remains were shuffled back and forth between the Smithsonian Institution and the Florida State Museum of History in Tallahassee. Experts could never reach an agreement and the remains were eventually lost just prior to the invention of Carbon-14 dating in 1947.
Interest in Vero Man gradually waned, though more recently there was some renewed interest in finding the remains. Vero Beach Magazine "How Vero Man was lost - and found again" September/October 1998.
